Sanathnagar TIMS nears completion, inauguration planned by Ugadi

Hyderabad: With multiple hospital and medical construction projects in full swing in Telangana, the Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) in Sanathnagar is scheduled for inauguration by March during Ugadi.

TIMS: A new era of super-specialty care

The Sanathnagar facility, a massive 1,000-bed super-specialty hospital, has reached 99 per cent completion of its civil works. The focus is to the final installation of cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, including advanced MRI and CT scanners.

Key features of Sanathnagar TIMS include:

1. Centre of Excellence: Dedicated primarily to advanced cardiac care.

2. Transplantation Hub: Will house a state-of-the-art Organ Transplantation Centre equipped to perform complex surgeries.

3. Operational Readiness: The Minister emphasised that the hospital will be ‘full-fledged from day one,’ avoiding the common trend of partial openings for publicity.

Alwal TIMS is also ready for inauguration

Simultaneously, the government is accelerating work on the other three TIMS branches in Alwal, LB Nagar and Gachibowli.

The Alwal TIMS facility, being built for Rs 1,196 crore, is also targeted for completion by March, with current physical progress standing at approximately 70-75 per cent.

Update on 17 new medical colleges

The state’s ambitious ‘One Medical College per District’ goal is entering its final phase.

Here is the current stage of work for the medical colleges:

Academic Expansion: As of early 2026, the state has already scaled up to 35 operational government medical colleges, with a total annual intake of 4,140 MBBS students.

Recent Approvals: The eight latest colleges (including Mulugu, Narsampet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Yadadri Bhongir, Medak, Maheshwaram and Qutbullapur) are now fully functional following infrastructure upgrades and staff recruitment carried out in late 2025.

Digital Transformation: The Health Minister recently directed the implementation of a Digital Education System across all 35 colleges. This includes:

- Smart Classrooms: Installation of LED screens and smart boards.

- Advanced Labs: Virtual labs and simulation-based learning modules.

- Mentorship: Osmania and Gandhi Medical Colleges will act as Centres of Excellence to mentor newer district colleges via telemedicine and AI tools.

Infrastructure surge and staffing

To support this massive expansion, the government has launched a two-pronged strategy:

Equipment Procurement: By the end of March, the state will deploy 485 new ventilators and multiple high-end MRI/CT machines across tertiary hospitals.

Human Resources: Over 10,000 health department posts have been filled in the last 24 months. Recruitment for an additional 7,000+ staff members is currently underway to ensure the new TIMS facilities and medical colleges are adequately staffed.

Osmania General Hospital at Goshamahal

While the TIMS projects are near completion, the foundation for the New Osmania General Hospital at Goshamahal has moved into full-scale construction.

With an outlay of Rs 2,700 crore, the project is expected to be a global medical landmark, adding 7,000 beds to the city’s capacity by 2027-2028.
