Say cheers! Telangana liquor sales hit Rs 1000 crore in run-up to Dasara

Hyderabad: Liquor sales in Telangana have set a new record in the run-up to Dasara.

Vends have lifted stocks worth over Rs 1,000 crore between September 26 and October 1.

The surge came as retailers and consumers stocked up in advance, anticipating heavy festive demand and the Gandhi Jayanti dry day on October 2.

Festive rush drives demand

Dasara is traditionally one of the biggest seasons for liquor consumption, with three days of celebrations on the eve, the festival day, and the day after.

Shop owners secured additional supplies to meet the rush, while many customers bought in bulk to avoid last-minute shortages.

Record sales in two days

According to the excise department, sales peaked at Rs 301 crore on September 30 and Rs 320 crore on October 1, adding up to Rs 620 crore in just two days. From September 1 to 29, sales had already touched Rs 2,715 crore.

Outpacing last year

This year’s festive sales have already surpassed last year’s figures. In 2023, nine days of Dasara sales brought in Rs 1,057 crore. In contrast, the Rs 1,000 crore mark has been crossed within just four days this year.

Steady growth over the years

Liquor sales in Telangana have grown consistently since statehood in 2014, when revenues stood at Rs 10,000 crore. They have risen to over Rs 35,000 crore in 2022-23, with similar figures projected for 2024-25.
