Visakhapatnam: Did you know that Visakhapatnam is one of the cities in Andhra Pradesh recording more number of road traffic accidents? The city records at least 1-2 deaths daily from road traffic accidents.

The new wheel locking drive commenced four days ago, and already, an average of 200 vehicles are being locked daily.

In a bid to curb the menace of wrong parking, especially at commercial establishments in busy areas, the Visakhapatnam City Police have initiated the 'Wheel Lock Drive'.

This is innovative program involves locking the wheel of any vehicle found parked in the wrong place.

Speaking to NewsMeter, ADCP Traffic Srinivas Rao said, "This will be a continuous process to ensure the vehicles are not parked wrongly. On the launch day, 500 vehicles were locked. Around 200 vehicles are locked, and a Rs 1035 fine is imposed daily."

"We have observed vehicles being parked everywhere, especially near commercial establishments. This is affecting the traffic in busy areas. So far, we are taking up this driver in 75 points in the city with 75 teams. We would extend this further to more areas," ADCP added.

What is wheel lock drive?

The 'wheel lock' drive experiment aims to curb vehicle parking errors and create awareness of traffic rules.

If your vehicle is found to be parked in a prohibited area, a traffic cop will promptly lock the tyre. To have your vehicle unlocked, you will need to pay a fine of Rs 1,035.

Meanwhile, the public at a few places argues that this drive cannot be taken up in areas such as Dabagardens, KGH, and Dwarakanagar, which have no parking spaces. Many establishments in the city need parking space but own a shop in the building.

The public urged the authorities to make it mandatory for shop owners to provide parking space for their customers.
