Hyderabad: The Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has taken a unanimous decision that senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi must contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Telangana.

The Political Affairs Committee met for the first time in Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad after the elections where the members thanked the people, senior members of the Congress party and the cadre who worked for the party’s success in the recently concluded State Assembly elections.

Indira Gandhi in 1980

During the meeting, the Telangana Congress members said that they are requesting Sonia Gandhi to contest from the state, similar to how former prime minister Indira Gandhi contested from Medak in 1980 and won the election. “The party workers are keen to see Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who has given Telangana, contest the Parliamentary elections from the state,” said political affairs committee convenor Shabbir Ali.

Telangana in debt

The state Congress members said that Telangana is in financial debt and the senior members of the Congress party are being apprised of the same. The leaders discussed the financial situation and measures to be taken to come out of the debt cycle.

“Irregularities in irrigation projects are being looked into and we are taking stern action. For the Medigadda barrage, a meeting with the director of L&T Construction was taken up,” said Telangana Minister for Irrigation, Food, and Civil Supplies, Uttam Kumar Reddy.

In the meeting, Uttam Kumar pulled up the L&T officials for the shoddy works of the barrage. The other agencies that have carried out works on the Annaram barrage are also being called in.

Congress guarantees

Addressing poll promises by Congress during the elections, the TPCC members said that chief minister Revanth Reddy will announce the remaining Congress guarantees in the Assembly. The first two guarantees – free bus rides for women and Aarogyasri health benefits up to Rs 10 lakhs – have been announced by the government. The members stated that the six guarantees are a priority of the government and they will be fulfilled.

Foundation Day

The members spoke about the Congress Foundation Day that will be celebrated on December 28 in Nagpur. The Congress leaders from across the state will be present in large numbers at Nagpur, said Shabbir Ali.
