Vijayawada: Indore in Madhya Pradesh has once again retained its top position as the cleanest city in India for the eighth consecutive year, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai, under the āSuper Swachh Leagueā category of the governmentās annual cleanliness survey. The results of the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 were announced on Thursday.
At the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 Awards Ceremony, Union Minister Manohar Lal presented the award for Best Ganga Town to Prayagraj, while Secunderabad Cantonment was honoured as the Best Cantonment Board for its exemplary sanitation efforts.
GVMC Visakhapatnam, Jabalpur, and Gorakhpur were declared Best SaifaiMitra Surakshit Shehar for their outstanding commitment to the safety and dignity of sanitation workers.
A special recognition was accorded to the UP government, Prayagraj Mela Adhikari and Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, for its exceptional urban waste management during the Mahakumbh, the worldās largest congregation, which witnessed an estimated footfall of 66 crore people.
14 crore citizens participated
In the āSwachh Shaharā category, which covers cities with a population of over 10 lakh, Ahmedabad claimed the first position, with Bhopal and Lucknow securing the second and third spots, respectively.
According to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, around 14 crore citizens participated in the nationwide survey through direct interactions, the Swachhata App, MyGov portal and social media platforms, covering more than 4,500 urban areas.
This year, a total of 78 awards were given across four major categories:
Super Swachh League Cities
Top Three Clean Cities across five population brackets
Special Category Awards, including Ganga Towns, Cantonment Boards, SafaiMitra Suraksha, and Mahakumbh
State-Level Awards for Promising Clean Cities in States and Union Territories.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana shine:
Five municipal corporations from Andhra PradeshāVisakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Rajahmundry, Guntur, and Tirupatiāwere honoured with awards under various categories.
Vijayawada was awarded under the Super Swachh League in the category of cities with a population of over 10 lakh.
Guntur won in the 3 to 10 lakh population category.
Tirupati was recognised in the category of cities with populations between 50,000 to 1 lakh.
Rajahmundry was named the Promising Clean City of Andhra Pradesh.
Hyderabad on Promising Clean City list
From Telangana, Hyderabad featured in the Promising Clean City list and achieved the prestigious 7-star rating in the Swachh Survekshan 2025 rankings.
Additionally, Secunderabad Cantonment secured the top spot in the Cleanest Cantonment Board category, representing Telangana with pride.
Notable mentions
Under the newly introduced āSuper Swachh Leagueā category for cities with a population between 3 and 10 lakh, Noida emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Chandigarh and Mysore.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards to the winners at a grand ceremony, which also saw the presence of Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, among other dignitaries.
This yearās Swachh Survekshan emphasised the āReduce, Reuse, Recycleā theme.
Over a period of 45 days, more than 3,000 trained assessors conducted meticulous inspections in every ward across the country. The awards not only celebrated the cleanest cities but also acknowledged smaller cities showing strong potential and improvement in sanitation and waste management.
