Hyderabad: Sankranthi turned tragic for several families in Telangana with at least 11 people succumbing to various mishaps related to flying kites in the last few days.

Most of the deceased were children who lost their lives while flying kites and by coming in contact with live electrical wires. Four of these deaths were reported in Hyderabad while a youth was killed in the neighbouring Sangareddy district.

On January 13, an 11-year-old boy died of electrocution at Attapur Lakshmi Vani Towers. The deceased, identified as Tanshik, was a native of Maharashtra. Tanshik succumbed to the injuries caused when he came in contact with a live electric wire of an air-conditioner while he was flying kites with his brothers.

In another incident, an Army soldier, identified as Nayak Koteswara Reddy (30), died after a Chinese manja wrapped his neck, causing him to lose control and fall from his moving vehicle on January 14. Reddy was a native of Pedda Waltair in Visakhapatnam and he was serving as a naik (driver) at the Langar House Military Hospital. The soldier is survived by his wife Pratyusha and a one-year-old baby. He was residing in a rented house in Langar House Bapu Nagar.

A second-year degree student, identified as Akash, lost his life after he accidentally fell from the terrace of his apartment complex at Pet Basheerabad on Sunday evening. Akashā€™s father Rajasekhar is serving as an assistant sub-inspector in Alwal police station.

In Nagole, a Class 8 student, identified as K Shiva Prasanna, lost his life after he fell from the fourth floor of a building while flying kites on the occasion of Sankranthi. The deceased boy was studying at the Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) in Nagole.

In Jogipet town of Sangareddy district, a 30-year-old man identified as Subrahmanyam died of electrocution while flying kites on a two-storey house. The incident happened at his in-laws' house he was visiting from Isnapur to celebrate the festival with his wife and two children.

In Achampet of Nagarkurnool district, a 12-year-old boy identified as Johab died due to electrocution while he was flying kites with his friends. Johab died when he came in contact with a live electric wire in his attempt to remove a kite stuck to them.

In another incident, a nine-year-old boy identified as Abuzar died after he was hit by Bengaluru-Nanded Express while he was trying to retrieve a kite fallen on the railway track near Navangi railway station of Basheerabad in Vikarabad district.

In Potpally village of Sangareddy district, a 22-year-old youth Siva Kumar died due to electrocution. The incident happened when Siva Kumar tried to remove the kite stuck between live electrical wires.

A youth identified as Chouhan Dev succumbed due to severe injuries after he accidentally fell from a five-storey building in Madhuranagar of Hyderabad while flying kites with his friends.

In Yapral, a boy succumbed to injuries he sustained from falling from a building while flying kites with his friends.

In another incident, a nine-year-old boy died on the spot due to electrocution after the manja of his kite was stuck between the electrical wires in Mylardevpally.
