Hyderabad: Telangana could be experiencing its hottest summer in the last seven years starting from March, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting temperatures to soar up to 48Ā°C this year.

The last time the mercury touched extreme levels was in 2017, when temperatures reached 47Ā°C multiple times.

Experts warn that March and April will be particularly critical, with a higher-than-usual number of heatwave days expected. The IMD has also indicated that above-normal nighttime temperatures will provide little respite from the scorching days.

February Already Showed Warning Signs

Typically, Telangana transitions smoothly from winter to summer, with February being relatively pleasant. However, this year, 22 districts recorded temperatures exceeding 37Ā°C in February.

ā€œThis is highly unusual. February is generally mild, but weā€™re already seeing March-like temperatures. This suggests a long, extreme summer ahead,ā€ said IMD Meteorologist, K.S. Sridhar, speaking to Newsmeter.

El NiƱo Effect to Blame?

Experts believe that El NiƱo, a climate pattern that warms Pacific Ocean waters and disrupts global weather, may be playing a role in this heat surge.

ā€œWhenever we have strong El NiƱo events, Telangana and parts of Central India experience longer and harsher summers. This year, the pattern is quite evident,ā€ explained Sridhar.

Summer Rains May Bring Temporary Relief

While IMD forecasts a few spells of summer rain, they are unlikely to provide long-term relief.

ā€œThere will be brief spells of rain, which might bring temperatures down for a day or two. However, humidity levels will rise, making it feel even hotter,ā€ said T. Balaji, popularly known as Telangana weatherman on X.

Heatwave Impact and Precautions

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to such extreme temperatures could lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and severe fatigue.

ā€œPeople, especially the elderly and outdoor workers, must stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours,ā€ advised Dr. Anita Rao, a general physician in Hyderabad.

The IMD has urged the state government to take preventive measures and issue public advisories on heatwave precautions.

With March already beginning on a warm note, Telangana residents may need to brace themselves for a relentless summer ahead.
