By Newsmeter Network Published on 8 Aug 2023 1:34 PM GMTHyderabad: The Telangana police have recovered 5,038 stolen/missing mobile phones using the CEIR portal, a platform developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to curb the menace of mobile theft and counterfeit mobile devices. This is the highest recovery rate in the country, followed by Karnataka at 54.20% and Andhra Pradesh at 50.90%.
The Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal was officially launched nationwide on May 17. But it was started on a pilot basis in Telangana State on April 19, 2023. In Telangana, the CEIR portal is operational in all 780 police stations.
The CEIR portal works by blocking the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of a stolen/missing mobile phone. This prevents the phone from being used on any cellular network in the country. The police can then track down the phone using the IMEI number.
In the case of Telangana, the police were able to recover 5,038 stolen/missing mobile phones. Of these, 1,000 were recovered in the last 16 days. Mahesh M Bhagwat, IPS, Addl. DGP, CID, is the nodal officer for the CEIR portal in Telangana.
The following is the consolidated data from the CEIR portal of the state of Telangana between April 20 and August 7, 2023
- Number of mobile devices blocked: 55,219
- Number of traceability reports received: 11,297
- Number of devices unblocked and handed over to rightful owners: 5,038
The Cyberabad Commissionerate contributed the most to the recovery of mobile devices, with 763 devices. The Hyderabad Commissionerate followed with 402 devices, and the Rachakonda Commissionerate followed with 398 devices. Warangal and Nizamabad police commissionerates also made significant contributions.
To enhance user-friendliness and serve the citizens of Telangana more efficiently, the Telangana Police, in coordination with DoT, has successfully integrated the CEIR portal with TS Police Citizen Portal. As a result, citizens are encouraged to utilise this service directly on the TS Police Citizen Portal instead of visiting a Mee Seva centre or a police station for reporting lost/missing mobile devices.
