Telangana finalises Mayor reservations: 50% seats for women, GHMC reserved

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Saturday finalised the reservation pattern for Mayors of Municipal Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities across the State, with 50 per cent of the posts reserved for women.

Announcing the details at a media conference, Municipal Administration Department Director Sridevi said reservations have been allotted for 10 Municipal Corporations and 121 Municipalities, in accordance with constitutional and statutory provisions.

Women get half the seats

As per the final allocation, women have been given half of the total posts across corporations and municipalities, marking a major push for women’s political representation in urban governance.

Among the 10 Municipal Corporations, reservations have been distributed as follows:

SC – 1

ST – 1

BC – 3 (including 1 Women seat)

General – 5, of which 4 are reserved for Women

Notably, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has been reserved for Women (General).

Corporation-wise reservation details

According to the final list:

Kothagudem Corporation – ST (General)

Ramagundam Corporation – SC (General)

Mahabubnagar Corporation – BC (Women)

Mancherial Corporation – BC (General)

Karimnagar Corporation – BC (General)

Greater Warangal Corporation – General

Khammam, Nalgonda and Nizamabad Corporations – Women (General)

Municipalities: Category-wise break-up

For the 121 Municipalities, reservations have been allotted as follows:

Scheduled Castes (SC): 17

Scheduled Tribes (ST): 5

Backward Classes (BC): 38

General Category: 61

Election Schedule Soon

Officials said the reservation process for municipal wards and corporation divisions is expected to be completed by Saturday evening. The final reservation list is likely to be forwarded to the Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) by late night or Sunday morning.

Once the government issues the formal Government Order (GO), the SEC is expected to announce the municipal election schedule within one or two days.

Political Significance

The reservation pattern is expected to play a crucial role in shaping political strategies ahead of the local body polls, especially with a strong emphasis on women’s participation and representation across urban local bodies in Telangana.
