Hyderabad: Telangana is gearing up to meet an unprecedented power demand, expected to exceed 19,000 MW in the upcoming Rabi and Summer seasons of 2026.
The state’s electricity officials reviewed preparedness measures at a high-level meeting at TGSPDCL headquarters, Mint Compound, on Saturday.
High-level review on Power Preparedness
Principal Secretary (Energy) Naveen Mittal has emphasized that electricity officials must remain fully prepared to handle the expected surge in demand. He noted that despite the state recording a maximum demand of 17,162 MW this year, supply remained stable and uninterrupted due to proactive planning by power utilities.
Officials were instructed to complete all line repairs, install new transformers, and implement other developmental works before December to ensure uninterrupted power supply during peak seasons.
Infrastructure Expansion and Upgrades
To meet rising demand, Southern DISCOM will establish 72 new substations, while Northern DISCOM will set up 31. TRANSCO is enhancing transformer capacity at 181 EHT substations.
Additionally, 8,384 new distribution transformers will be installed under Southern DISCOM and 5,280 under Northern DISCOM. Expansion of EHT/33/11 kV lines and PTR capacities at 33/132/220/400 kV substations is also underway to strengthen the state’s grid.
Thermal power and coal supply secured
TGGENCO has completed overhaul works for nearly all power generation units, with BTPS and KTPS-IV units nearing readiness. All units at Yadadri Thermal Power Station are expected to become operational within months, adding 4,000 MW of capacity.
Singareni Collieries CMD Balaram confirmed coal production will rise from 1.80 million tonnes per day to 2.20 million tonnes per day by November, ensuring uninterrupted coal supply to all state thermal plants.
Automation and Smart Grid Initiatives
Naveen Mittal directed CMDs to implement automation for transformers and feeders at the LT/11 kV level to enhance transparency and service quality. He also emphasized expanding SCADA-like technology from Hyderabad to rural areas, building on the success of the Feeder Outage Management System in Southern DISCOM.
Hyderabad to become EV Hub
Under the PM-eDrive initiative, officials were urged to leverage incentives for establishing EV charging stations and promote Hyderabad as India’s electric vehicle capital. TGSPDCL CMD Sri Musharaf Faruqui, IAS, said 3,121 potential EV charging locations have been identified so far, with more expected in the coming months.
Government Support and Commitment
Naveen Mittal reiterated that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister prioritize the power sector, assuring full government support. He called on senior officials to ensure reliable, high-quality service for electricity consumers statewide.
