Telangana may see heavy rainfall over four days; yellow alert issued

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rains across Telangana, including Hyderabad, over the next four days. In view of the conditions, a yellow alert has been issued for most districts of the state, valid till September 14.

Thundershowers and gusty winds

According to the IMD bulletin, rainfall accompanied by thundershowers and gusty winds is expected in Hyderabad from Wednesday to Saturday. For the city, the yellow alert specifically applies on September 12 and 13.

The alert covers all districts of Telangana except Jogulamba Gadwal, Wanaparthy and Nagarkurnool, which are likely to see only light rainfall during the period.

“Moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are interacting with a low-pressure system over central India, leading to widespread rainfall in Telangana,” said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter.

Temperature drop across Telangana

The fresh spell of rains has already led to a dip in temperatures across the State.

The lowest temperature, 28.7°C, was recorded in Adilabad. In Hyderabad, Tirumalagiri recorded the lowest at 33.2°C, offering some respite from the humid conditions earlier this month.

“Day temperatures are expected to remain below normal in the coming week due to cloud cover and rainfall. However, humidity will stay high, especially in Hyderabad,” noted Sridhar.

Preparedness and travel advisory

The IMD has urged residents to plan their travel with caution, especially on days marked under the yellow alert. Waterlogging and traffic congestion are possible in low-lying areas of Hyderabad.

“Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds can cause temporary disruption in power supply and road traffic. Citizens are advised to avoid open areas during lightning activity,” said Sridhar.

Municipal authorities have also been alerted to keep drainage channels clear and deploy emergency response teams in vulnerable neighbourhoods.

Rainfall in context

This year’s monsoon has been marked by fluctuating spells in Telangana. While August saw below-average rainfall in some districts, September is expected to compensate with higher intensity showers.

“September is often the month when monsoon systems peak over Telangana,” said Sridhar. “What we are seeing now is a typical late-season surge, and it will be important for the public to remain alert to daily weather updates.”

Staying informed is a must

With forecasts indicating heavy rainfall until September 14, the IMD will issue updated advisories based on the movement of the weather system. Residents are encouraged to monitor daily alerts and take necessary precautions.

“Timely preparedness can reduce the risk from intense weather. Our advice is simple: stay informed, stay cautious and plan movements accordingly,” Sridhar added.
