Telangana ranks first in cybercrimes; over 10,000 cases reported in 2021

According to the 'Crime in India-2021' report released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the state has witnessed 10,303 cybercrime cases in 2021. In 2020, the number was 5,024.
The state saw over 86 percent (5,024 cases) rise in 2020 compared to 2019. A majority (7,003) of the cyber crimes were pertaining to fraud 'involving communication devices as a medium'. Also, the state stood second in the country when it came to economic offences. It saw a whopping 60 percent increase in 2021 compared to 2020.
Of the total 10,303 cybercrime cases in 2021 in the state, 8,690 cybercrimes were related to fraud (financial crimes). The state also reported two cybercrimes related to terrorist activities. The data also revealed that Telangana saw an increase of over 17 percent in crime against women in 2021 and stands eighth in the country. Of the 20,865 cases pertaining to crimes against women, 45 percent of them were related to cruelty by husbands (498A of IPC).
Telangana recorded 823 rape cases, ranking 12th in the category. Another dubious distinction that the state earned in 2021 was that it came third in crimes against senior citizens with a 21 percent increase compared to 2020. Theft, fraud, simple hurt, and trespassing cases were the most common crimes against the elderly.
