Hyderabad: Telangana government has ordered the removal of all Transport Department check posts in a bid to improve logistics and make the state more business-friendly.

The move is expected to ensure seamless travel, cut down transportation costs, and strengthen revenue enforcement through technology-driven systems.

Centre’s advisory on Check Posts

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), in a 2023 advisory, had urged states to do away with border check posts following the introduction of GST.

The Centre highlighted that several states had already dismantled such posts, resulting in smoother interstate travel, improved logistics efficiency, and reduced delays for commercial vehicles.

Transport Commissioner’s recommendations

Acting on the advisory, the Telangana Transport Commissioner submitted a detailed proposal in 2024 and 2025, stressing that removing border check posts would:

Enhance transparency in vehicle movement, reduce operational hassles, lower transportation costs, and improve Telangana’s ranking in ease of doing business.

The proposal also emphasized that shifting to technology-based monitoring would help curb tax evasion while maintaining enforcement revenue.

Conditions laid down by the Government

While abolishing physical check posts, the government has introduced a set of measures to strengthen compliance and enforcement:

Online System: Temporary permits and Motor Vehicle Tax payments can now be made online, with the facility integrated into the VAHAN software. Awareness will be created through boards at border points and communication with neighboring states.

Staff Redeployment: Motor Vehicle Inspectors posted at check posts will be reassigned to district enforcement duties, focusing on road safety and preventing tax evasion.

Mobile Squads: For six months, mobile enforcement units will be deployed in border districts to educate transporters and ensure no vehicle enters Telangana without paying due taxes.

Tech-Driven Monitoring: ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras will be installed at borders. Integrated with e-enforcement and VAHAN, this system will automatically flag violations.

Handheld Devices: Enforcement officers will be equipped with devices to track violators in real time.

Implementation oversight

The Transport Commissioner has been directed to issue clear instructions to all District Transport Officers for the smooth rollout of these changes. The Finance Department has concurred with the decision.

A step towards seamless mobility

With this reform, Telangana joins the list of states that have dismantled traditional transport check posts, shifting towards digital enforcement.

The initiative is expected not only to cut down logistics delays but also to enhance Telangana’s image as an investment-friendly and progressive state.
