Telangana sees 14% surge in power demand as Kharif season peaks
Hyderabad: Telangana is witnessing a sharp increase in electricity demand this monsoon, with the state registering a peak load of 15,443 megawatts on July 16, reflecting a 14.05 percent rise compared to 13,541 MW recorded on July 31 last year.
Officials attribute the spike to high agricultural activity and growing urban consumption.
Paddy sowing boosts rural power load
With steady rainfall improving water levels across the state, paddy cultivation has picked up pace, driving up electricity usage in rural areas. Lakhs of agricultural pump sets are reportedly running continuously, contributing significantly to the spike in power demand.
Urban consumption also on the rise
In parallel, Greater Hyderabad is seeing higher electricity consumption across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors, adding to the overall pressure on the grid.
Energy secretary holds power supply review
To address the rising demand, Energy Secretary Sri Naveen Mittal, IAS, held a video conference with officials of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TGSPDCL). He directed all teams to ensure round-the-clock power supply, particularly as demand may rise further in the coming weeks.
Field staff directed to stay on alert
Mittal instructed that from CMD-level officials to linemen, all staff must be present and alert during rains. He stressed the importance of real-time monitoring and quick response mechanisms to avoid any service disruptions, especially during the critical Kharif season.
Government actively monitoring power sector
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu are reportedly keeping close watch on the power supply situation and have given clear instructions to prioritize seamless service delivery during this crucial season, Mittal added.
The review was attended by TGSPDCL CMD Musharraf Faruqui, Directors Dr. Narsimhulu, Chakrapani, Krishna Reddy, and senior engineering staff.
