Hyderabad: Telangana is set to have three more airports at Warangal, Adilabad, and Peddapalli.
These are in addition to the existing International Rajiv Gandhi Airport at Shamshabad in Hyderabad.
According to the office of Vikas Raj, Special Chief Secretary, Transport, Roads and Buildings, last month, the Telangana government authorized Adilabad District Collector Rajarshi Shah to acquire 700 acres of land needed for the development of the proposed airport. This was a major step toward supporting the multi-aviation projects proposed across the state.
India had around 70 airports in 2014. Since then, the number has crossed 160. “The country has built over twice as many airports in just a decade. The three airports proposed to be developed in Telangana will add to the rapidly growing aviation industry,” said an official.
During the Telangana Global Summit held in December 2025, the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, in its two-year progress report, revealed that the process to operationalise airports at Warangal, Adilabad, and Peddapalli has already begun. The cargo services from Warangal Airport are expected to be launched next year, giving a major boost to regional trade and exports.
Let’s walk through the various stages of development of the proposed airports in Telangana:
Mamnoor Airport, Warangal District
The District Collector of Warangal, along with a public representative, is in the process of land acquisition for the airport.
Tanks in Patta Shikam are affecting the runway. A notified tank is also coming in the way. The irrigation department has proposed the diversion of the stream without affecting the Ayacut. An amount of Rs 68.81 crore is required for the reconstruction of Irrigation structures.
A specific road connectivity from Mamnoor to Gunturpally, as the intersecting road in the proposed airport runway, is an important communication source connecting Warangal. The government has acquired 253 acres of additional land sought by AAl for upgradation.
Adilabad Airport, Adilabad District
Hyderabad’s Shamshabad airport is about 360 km south of Adilabad, while the town is about 200 km from Nagpur city airport in Maharashtra. The other favourite destinations for flyers of Adilabad are Bengaluru and Tirupati.
Adilabad is also centrally located from the point of view of existing Air Force Stations around Hyderabad, Bidar, and Nagpur. Taking this aspect into consideration, the proposed airport is most likely to be used by the Indian Air Force.
IAF has agreed in principle to the proposal ofthe Telangana government for civil aerial operations from Adilabad airfield. IAF suggested that it could be developed as a joint user airfield with AAI.
Ministry of Defence has no objection to the development of Adilabad airfield as ja oint user airport. However, funding for the project may be decided by the state government in consultation with AAI.
It is suggested to have a large runway along with associated infrastructure like ATC, terminal building, and other minimum facilities to get the aerodrome license and operate the airport. The phase-wise expansion may be considered in the future.
(Anthargaon) Peddapalli District
As per the feasibility report submitted by the Airport Authority of India, the proposed airport at Basanth Nagar was not feasible. As per the Obstacle Limitation Survey, there are hills on all sides of the proposed site, causing major obstacles. The overhead HT lineise also crisscrossing the approach of the runway.
District Collector, Peddapalli, submitted an alternative proposal on November 12, 2024, for a land parcel of 591.24 acres at Anthargaon Mandal for building the airport.
AAI team visited Antharhaon mandal Peddapalli on December 3 and 4, 2025, to conduct a prefeasibility study, and the report will be expected bythey end.
