Hyderabad: Starting October 6 (Monday), passengers travelling in Hyderabad and Secunderabad city bus services will have to pay Rs 5 to 10 more per trip, with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) announcing a nominal fare hike effective.

The additional charge, cleared by the state government on September 23, will help fund the corporation’s ambitious plan to replace diesel buses with 2,800 electric buses by 2027.

Revised fare structure

The fare hike applies to all city services, both regular and electric.

City Ordinary, Metro Express, e-Ordinary, and e-Express: Rs 5 extra for the first three stages and Rs 10 from the fourth stage onward.

Metro Deluxe and e-Metro AC services: Rs 5 for the first stage and Rs 10 from the second stage onward.

TGSRTC clarified that the hike is modest and temporary, aimed purely at supporting the shift toward cleaner and more sustainable public transport.

2,800 electric buses by 2027

As part of its “Clean and Green Hyderabad” initiative, TGSRTC plans to introduce 2,800 electric buses within the Outer Ring Road limits by 2027, gradually phasing out diesel-run vehicles.

Officials said the move would curb air pollution, ease traffic congestion, and promote the use of public transport over private vehicles.

A step toward a Cleaner City

Describing the initiative as a landmark in urban mobility, TGSRTC officials said the transition to electric buses will significantly reduce vehicular emissions, leading to lower rates of respiratory and heart ailments among city residents.

“This project reflects the government’s commitment to building a pollution-free, health-friendly transport network,” officials added.

Infrastructure development underway

To support the growing e-bus fleet, the corporation is expanding its infrastructure base: Currently, 265 electric buses operate across six depots in Greater Hyderabad, with 275 more to be added this year.

Each of the six depots has been upgraded with high-tension (HT) charging connections in partnership with TGSPDCL and TRANSCO, at a cost of Rs 8 crore per depot.

TGSRTC is now setting up HT connections in 19 additional depots and will establish 10 new depots and 10 charging stations, at an estimated cost of Rs 392 crore.

Public Cooperation Sought

TGSRTC appealed to citizens to support this eco-friendly shift and help the corporation meet its environmental goals.

“The electric bus initiative is a revolutionary step toward a pollution-free Hyderabad,” said a TGSRTC spokesperson. “We urge the public to join us in this green journey and continue supporting RTC services as they always have.”

Officials expressed confidence that with public cooperation, Hyderabad’s public transport network will soon emerge as a model for sustainable urban mobility.
