Thunderstorms, lightning expected across Telangana from Oct 14-18

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Telangana, forecasting thunderstorms and lightning from October 14 to 18.
Several districts, including Hyderabad, Nizamabad and Rangareddy are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds in isolated areas.
Potential thunderstorms
The IMD has placed a yellow alert for the State, indicating potential thunderstorms and lightning in various districts throughout the five-day period.
Day 1 (October 14): Thunderstorms are expected in districts such as Adilabad, Hyderabad, Nalgonda and Rangareddy.
Day 2 (October 15): Thunderstorms are likely to occur in areas like Nirmal, Nizamabad and Warangal.
Day 3 (October 16): Isolated thunderstorms are predicted for Bhadradri Kothagudem, Medchal Malkajgiri and Mahabubnagar.
Day 4 (October 17): Thunderstorms with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected in Mulugu, Khammam and other districts.
Day 5 (October 18): Gusty winds and thunderstorms may affect Adilabad, Jagitial, and other areas.
No severe weather after October 18
IMD has not issued any weather warnings for Telangana for October 19 and 20. However, light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms may still occur in isolated areas of the State, including Hyderabad.
Expert opinion
Dr K Naga Ratna, head of the Meteorological Centre in Hyderabad, emphasised the need for caution. āResidents should stay informed about weather developments and be prepared to move to safer locations if conditions worsen,ā they advised.
T Balaji popularly known as Telangana weatherman said, āThunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds can cause significant damage to loose or unsecured structures. Itās essential for people to follow the advisories and avoid sheltering under trees during such weather.ā
Safety measures and public advisory
The IMD has provided the following safety recommendations:
- Avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during thunderstorms.
- Halt farming operations temporarily during the warning period.
- Municipal authorities are advised to prepare for water pooling, traffic disruptions and the risk of trees or electric poles falling.
For Hyderabad, the next 24 hours may bring light rain or thundershowers, especially in the evening or night. The expected temperatures range from a maximum of 33Ā°C to a minimum of 23Ā°C. The IMD has encouraged the public to stay updated by downloading weather apps like the Mausam app, the Damini app (for lightning alerts), and the Meghdoot app (for agricultural updates).
