New Delhi: Cracking down on sexually explicit content, the Centre has directed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block public access to 25 OTT platforms, including Ullu, ALTT and Desiflix over alleged obscenity and indecency.

MIB issues blocking orders

In its recent notification, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) stated that these platforms were found violating several provisions of Indian law. Under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, intermediaries are obligated to restrict or remove illegal content.

Platforms violating Indian Laws

The banned platforms include Big Shots App, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab App, Kangan App, Bull App, Jalva App, Wow Entertainment, Look Entertainment, Hitprime, Feneo, ShowX, Sol Talkies, Adda TV, HotX VIP, Hulchul App, MoodX, NeonX VIP, Fugi, Mojflix and Triflicks.

Authorities cited violations of Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act, Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986.

ISPs ordered to comply

The MIB has also informed the Department of Telecommunications to ensure that ISPs comply with the blocking orders. ā€œThis action reflects the government’s commitment to uphold digital content laws and maintain regulatory standards,ā€ official sources said.

Supreme Court’s earlier observation

In April, while hearing a plea seeking a ban on sexually explicit content on OTT and social media platforms, the Supreme Court remarked that such enforcement falls under the executive’s domain. The Solicitor General assured the bench that existing rules are in place and additional measures are under consideration.
