UoH professor suspended over alleged sexual assault of foreign student

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Saturday suspended Ravi Ranjan, a professor in the department of Hindi, for allegedly attempting to sexually assault an international student studying at the university.

"The University of Hyderabad condemns the incident that occurred involving Prof. Ravi Ranjan, Department of Hindi, and a student on December 2, 2022. Prof. Ravi Ranjan is placed under suspension with immediate effect," read the official statement from the university.

The Gachibowli police have booked the professor under sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested him.

According to sources, the girl was taken to the professor's residence in Kondapur where he lived alone. She was forced to consume alcohol and the professor touched her inappropriately. At around 9:30 p.m, the professor dropped the girl off at the Tagore International hostel on the campus.
