By Sri Lakshmi Muttevi Published on 14 March 2024 2:53 PM GMTHyderabad: Vehicle registrations under the State code āTGā will begin from March 15. A few days ago, a gazette notification was issued to change vehicle registration plates from TS to TG.
From Friday, all new vehicles registered will have TG on their nameplates.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a gazette notification, aimed to enhance regulatory clarity and effectiveness, following which Telangana will be represented by the character TG instead of TS in vehicle registration numbers. This change will now apply to all new official cars and communication.
When did this start?
The discussions for an apt unique State code for Telangana vehicles began during the statehood agitation. After the bifurcation from Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the Centre even allotted the letters TG to Telangana State. However, Bharat Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrashekhar Rao had opted for the code āTSā as the state abbreviation, reportedly due to numerological reasons.
In September 2022, chief minister A Revanth Reddy, then Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president, said that the Congress party would go back to the previous practice of abbreviating Telangana (TG) in all vehicle registration numbers if voted to power.
The CM also earlier noted that the word āStateā does not appear in the alphabet portion of the vehicle registration number in any other state, like Uttar Pradesh (UP), Karnataka (KA), Andhra Pradesh (AP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Tamil Nadu (TN). According to him, TS is simply TRS without the āRā in between. Then, the Congress leader Koturi Manavata Roy protested against the then KCR-led State government by writing TG on his vehicle instead of TS.
