Hyderabad: Renowned actor and Padma Shri awardee Kota Srinivasa Rao passed away at his residence in Filmnagar, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, in the early hours of Sunday. The 83-year-old had been unwell for the past few days and succumbed to age-related health complications, just two days after celebrating his birthday.

A Career Spanning Over Four Decades

Born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kota Srinivasa Rao began his career as a doctor before transitioning to theatre and eventually cinema. He made his film debut in 1978 with Pranam Khareedu and went on to act in more than 750 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi languages. His performances, especially in antagonist and character roles, became an integral part of Telugu cinema.

Apart from his cinematic journey, Rao also had a significant political career. He served as a BJP MLA from the Vijayawada East constituency between 1999 and 2004. In 2015, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts.

TPCC President Mahesh Kumar Goud Condoles Death

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud expressed his deep grief over the actor’s demise. He said, ā€œIt is heartbreaking to hear that Padma Shri Kota Srinivasa Rao is no more. He acted in over 750 films across various languages and carved a unique place for himself in Indian cinema with his exceptional acting talent.ā€

He also acknowledged Rao’s contributions outside of cinema, stating, ā€œApart from being an outstanding actor, his contributions in the sphere of public service are also commendable. His demise is an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family members and admirers.ā€

Vishnu Manchu: ā€œA Legend Beyond Wordsā€

Actor Vishnu Manchu took to social media to express his sorrow. He wrote, ā€œA Legend Beyond Words. My heart is heavy with the loss of Sri. Kota Srinivas garu. A phenomenal actor, an unmatched talent, and a man whose presence lit up every frame he was in. Whether it was a serious role, a villain, or comedy — he brought life into every character with a rare mastery that only a few are blessed with.ā€

He further added, ā€œI had the good fortune of working with him in quite a few films, and I grew up watching him in many more. His work shaped my admiration for cinema. To his family, my deepest condolences. We may have lost him physically, but his art, his laughter, and his soul will live on in every scene he graced. Rest in peace, sir. You will be missed. You will be remembered. Always.ā€

Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Joins in Mourning

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy called Rao’s death a ā€œprofound shock.ā€ In a statement, he said, ā€œFamous actor Kota Srinivasa Rao — the death was a profound shock. For the film industry, the lack of him is irreparable. Even though Kota is not physically with us, the different roles he played will remain forever in the hearts of the Telugu people.ā€

He added, ā€œPraying to God for the peace of his soul, I express my deepest condolences to the family members.ā€

Film Industry and Political Leaders Pay Tribute

Several other notable figures also expressed their condolences. Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli wrote on X, ā€œDeeply saddened to hear about the passing of Kota Srinivasa Rao garu. A master of his craft, a legend who breathed life into every character he portrayed. His presence on screen was truly irreplaceable. My heartfelt condolences to his family. Om Shanti.ā€

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said, ā€œThe demise of the renowned actor Kota Srinivasa Rao, who won the affection of cinema audiences with his versatile roles, is deeply saddening. His artistic contributions to the fields of cinema and theatre over nearly four decades, and the roles he portrayed, will remain unforgettable.ā€

Naidu added, ā€œThe numerous memorable roles he played as a villain and character artist will forever stay etched in the hearts of Telugu audiences. His passing is an irreparable loss to the Telugu film industry. In 1999, he won as an MLA from Vijayawada and served the public. I express my profound condolences to his family members.ā€

Actor Ravi Teja also shared a personal note: ā€œGrew up watching him, admiring him, and learning from every performance. Kota Babai was like family to me. I cherish the lovely memories of working with him. Rest in peace, Kota Srinivasa Rao garu. Om Shanti.ā€

Kota Srinivasa Rao’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cinema. Known for his versatility and commanding screen presence, his contributions helped shape the landscape of Telugu film and theatre.
