Vijayawada: Deceased patient’s attendants assault duty doctor at GGH; medicos go on strike

Vijayawada: All post-graduate medicos went on a flash strike after attendants of a deceased patient assaulted a duty doctor at Government General Hospital (GGH, Vijayawada.

According to the medicos, on July 11, a 54-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital after he consumed poison. The patient had consumed poison on Wednesday night, but he was brought to the hospital on Thursday.

"As his condition started deteriorating, he was admitted to the ICU. When the duty doctor tried to explain his condition to the attendants, they started abusing and attacking him. The duty doctor tried to administer CPR after noticing cardiac arrest. However, relatives went berserk and started hitting the doctor," said a Medico at GGH.

One of the Medico said, "Unfortunately the security was unavailable at that time. All the PG students went to the ICU. However, the relatives started arguing with us. The nurse immediately locked the room and tried to bring the situation under control."

Later the medicos tried to approach GGH Superintendent Dr Venkatesh to explain the incident. However, he did not respond immediately. "When we tried to give him the letter explaining what happened and asked for security, he did not pay any heed. As the superintendent was not ready to file FIR, we approached APJUDA (Junior Doctor Association) for boycotting services on Friday," said Medicos at GGH Vijayawada.

Later under pressure, the superintendent filed an FIR on the incident. However, the sections were mentioned as trespassing and damage to the infrastructure. However, the assault on the doctor was not included in the FIR.

"FIR has no mention of assault on the duty doctor. The DME approached us and supported the administration. He asked us to join duties. There is a need for proper security in the wards to avoid attacks on doctors. We will continue our strike until justice is done to us. The attendants of the deceased patient are roaming in the hospital, threatening us in full public view," said a medico.
