Visakhapatnam: The sleuths of the Vizag Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) unearthed a gold smuggling racket and arrested two persons in the early hours of 5 January. They seized 1.86 kg of gold (in the form of bars and pieces) valued at Rs. 1.07 crores from them.
The two arrested persons are a gold smuggler who arrived from Kolkata, West Bengal by Shalimar-Secunderabad AC Superfast Express at Vizag railway station and his employer who came to the station to receive the gold.
The DRI also conducted searches at the residence and gold shop of the proprietor where certain incriminating materials were found.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the smuggled gold is routed from Bangladesh and is melted and recast into gold bars and pieces of different shapes and sizes in Kolkata and supplied to various parts of the country.The two persons were arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962. They were remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Central Prison, Visakhapatnam on 6 January. The DRI officials said further investigation is underway.
