Vizag gas tragedy: Two youngsters die of poisonous gas leak in Pharma City

Visakhapatnam, November 29: Two youngsters were killed after reportedly inhaling some poisonous gases released in a pump house at Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City (JNPC) in Parawada of Vizag city in the wee hours of Monday.

The police said that Manikanta and Durga Prasad, both aged around 25 were contract workers working in night shift in the pump house when the gases reportedly leaked. They died after allegedly inhaling them.

The bodies have been shifted to King George Hospital (KGH) in Vizag city for postmortem. However, a few workers associations blamed the management for negligence and for not taking safety measures at the premises, which led to the incident.

The Parawada Police say the leak has been contained and the situation is under control, but they are yet to ascertain the complete details. Over 40 people died and 150 were injured in the accidents in pharma units, JNPC in between 2013 and 2020, the leaders and activists of various trade unions added.
