Weaving magic: Telanganas Pochampally in UNWTOs list of best villages

Hyderabad: Pochampally, the silk city of Telangana in Nalgonda district, has been selected as one of the best villages by the United Nations World Trade Organization (UNWTO). The town is popular for the high-quality sarees that are woven by the weaving families in the town.

The Pochampally weaving style obtained Geographical Indication (GI) in 2004.

Telangana minister for municipal administration and urban development K.T Rama Rao shared the happy news on Twitter and wrote, "My compliments to the people of Pochampally, Telangana on being selected as one of the best Tourism Villages by United Nations World Tourism Organisation. The prestigious award will be given on the occasion of the 24th session of the UNWTO General Assembly on Dec 2 in Madrid, Spain."

Narayanpet district collector Hari Chandana Dasari shared her sentiments and said, "Pochampally ikkat weavers are world-renowned and the fabric is amazing. The way the whole village life revolves around weavers and their families is also unique. This has been captured well in movies like 'Mallesham'. The wrap and weft techniques used by the weavers are quite amazing to watch and a dream to wear."

Responding to the good news, Ms. Hari Chandana added, "I am happy that the village which gave birth to these weavers is recognized by UNWTO. It's a matter of pride for Telangana."
