Hyderabad: Dansari Anasuya, popularly known as Seethakka, is a three-time legislator from the Mulugu (ST) constituency. The political journey of the 52-year-old from the tribal community is remarkable and it began with her involvement in the Janashakti Naxal group, taking up arms at the age of 14.

Born into a disadvantaged Gotti Koya tribal family, Seethakka felt inspired by the armed Naxal movement around her, and their supposed ideology to fight for the rights of suppressed and deprived sections.

Transition to mainstream society

In 1997, after spending 11 years underground, Seethakka grew disillusioned with the path of violence, opting to lay down her arms and join mainstream society. This marked a turning point, leading her to pursue education while working for an NGO to support herself. During this period, she earned a law degree and began practising law in the Warangal district court.

Advocacy for marginalized communities

Seethakka’s legal practice focused on providing essential legal assistance to marginalised groups, particularly tribals facing harassment from the police. Her commitment to justice and advocacy for tribal rights became integral to her identity, setting the stage for her entry into politics.

Entry into politics

In 2004, Seethakka entered politics by joining the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Despite facing an initial setback, she was elected as the Mulugu MLA in 2009, establishing her political presence. A temporary defeat in 2014 did not deter her spirit, and in 2018, she rebounded by joining the Congress and winning the Mulugu seat.

Academic pursuits

Demonstrating a commitment to education, Seethakka completed her PhD in political science from Osmania University in 2022. Her thesis focused on the social exclusion and deprivation of migrant tribals, showcasing a dedication to academic pursuits alongside her political career.

Service during Covid pandemic

Seethakka’s leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic brought her into the spotlight. Recognising the vulnerability of people in remote tribal villages, she traversed forests on foot, by tractor or two-wheelers, distributing food and groceries. Despite facing criticism from rivals labelling her efforts as ‘publicity stunts,’ Seethakka remained steadfast in ensuring that the basic needs of local tribals were met.

Electoral triumph in 2023

In the latest State Assembly elections, Seethakka secured a significant victory in Mulugu, securing over 33,000 votes against the BRS candidate. Her focus on tackling unemployment and creating job opportunities in her constituency reflects a commitment to grassroots issues.

Advocacy and plans

Seethakka frequently emphasised the importance of education, drawing from her own experiences. She plans to establish skill development centres in Mulugu, aiming to empower local youths and spare them the challenges of traveling to Hyderabad.

Beyond her political pursuits, Seethakka continues to be a vocal advocate for tribal rights and social justice. Her leadership style emphasises inclusivity and community welfare, making her a respected figure among her constituents.
