Hyderabad: A low-pressure area to form over the northwestern Bay of Bengal which will bring widespread heavy rains across the state

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Meteorological Department has advised people across Telangana to gear up for an active southwest monsoon until the weekend.

A fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwestern Bay of Bengal, which, officials said, will bring widespread heavy rains across the state.

“Telangana is very likely to receive copious amounts of rainfall until August 16. Hyderabad will receive heavy rains between Wednesday and Friday,” said meteorologist K. S. Sridhar speaking to Newsmeter.

Weather Alerts and Rainfall Ranges

A yellow alert (heavy rainfall) has been issued for August 11–13 for Hyderabad, Mulugu, Nirmal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhongir, Rangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri districts.

A yellow alert is issued when “rainfall is anticipated to be between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm,” the IMD clarified.

For August 14–17, an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rainfall) has been issued for Hyderabad, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Mahabubabad, Yadadri Bhongir, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, and Medak districts.

The IMD explained that “an orange alert is issued when rainfall is expected to be between 115.6 mm and 204.5 mm.”

Overnight Rains in Hyderabad

Heavy overnight showers on Sunday brought a cool, damp start to Monday in the city. Rainfall recorded on Sunday night ranged from 30 mm to 50 mm in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Uppal (Medchal-Malkajgiri) recorded 47.8 mm, followed by Gajularamaram (31 mm), University of Hyderabad (30.5 mm), Kushaiguda (25.8 mm), Chandanagar (24.8 mm), and Kakatiya Hills, Madhapur (22 mm).

“Late-night thunderstorms with lightning affected northern, western, and eastern GHMC limits, with Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy seeing the most intense activity,” the department noted.

Areas Impacted

The heaviest rain in eastern Hyderabad was reported from Ghatkesar, Keesara, Bhongir, Kapra, Sainikpuri, Dr. A.S. Rao Nagar, Dammaiguda, Nagaram, ECIL, Alwal, Quthbullapur, Uppal, Hayathnagar, Vanasthalipuram, and LB Nagar. Secunderabad localities such as Marredpally also saw significant downpours.

Earlier in the evening, Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kukatpally, Ameerpet, KPHB, Chandanagar, Miyapur, Balanagar, Alwal, and areas under the Serilingampally zone also experienced heavy rainfall.

Forecast

The Hyderabad Meteorological Department forecast indicates that “light to moderate rainfall will continue at many places throughout the State till August 17.” Residents have been advised to monitor updates and take necessary precautions during the active monsoon phase.
