TS govt. forms new wing to study, maintain nala system in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The Telangana government, on 2 November, announced it would establish a Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP), a dedicated new project wing to plan, develop, and maintain comprehensive stormwater drainage/nala system in Hyderabad. It will be an exclusive wing within the GHMC with the overall objective of mitigating the adversities on account of heavy rains/urban floods in the future.

"Hyderabad city experienced unprecedented rains in October and consequent flooding of many low-lying areas and colonies is attributed, among other things, to narrowing of nalas and stormwater drains in Hyderabad, preventing the free flow of water," said Arvind Kumar, the principal secretary to the government, in his order.

The project wing will study the existing nala and stormwater drainage system and identify critical marrow points, encroachments on nalas, study trunk mains, feeder nalas, and all other issues and submit reports to take up all works in a mission mode.

The SNDP will exclusively look after nala/stormwater drain issues in coordination with other departments and will work under the overall control of the GHMC commissioner. Officials from the irrigation department and field experts from open source can be inducted based on field requirements. The policies, programmes, and activities of this wing are subjected to frequent review at a higher level.

The government has posted Vasantha, chief Engineer (retired), from R&b department as OSD, SNDP, GHMC.
