The report, titled “Arts and Humanities Research in India, South Asia, and East Asia”, was released recently by the Savitribai Phule Pune University's Centre for Publication Ethics. It scrutinised articles in journals and book chapters in 5,484 publications in India, 6,233 in South Asia, and 34,907 in East Asia in the fields of literature, history, language, and philosophy that were indexed in the highly-respected Web of Science database for the period 1989-2020.
Earlier, Professor K. Narayana Chandran had ranked number one in India and South Asia, and ninth in South and East Asia (which includes China, Japan, and Singapore), while Prof. Pramod K. Nayar ranked third in India and South Asia, and 18th in South and East Asia.
After discovering anomalies in the names of authors and affiliations indexed in the database, the Centre revised its 2019 report. The latest shows Prof. Chandran at number one in India and South Asia, while he ranks fourth in South and East Asia. Prof. Nayar is in the second position in India and seventh in South and East Asia.
Prof. Appa Rao Podile, the Vice-Chancellor of UoH, expressed his delight at the revised report and the distinction of the two faculty members. He said this proves that research at UoH is of the very highest order. Such reports will enable the university to identify its signature areas of research so that it can be strengthened under the Institution of Eminence project, he added.
