For the first time in 30 years, the State has won a Central Government award for its tableau. The tableau featuring the Etikoppaka toys was awarded the third prize in the jury category by the Central Government.
Andhra’s rich heritage in handicrafts
The Tableau, showcasing the significance of the State’s handicrafts while symbolising Andhra Pradesh’s rich heritage, was designed using the iconic Etikoppaka toys. It stood out as the highlight of the Republic Day celebrations and drew the attention of people across the nation.
The tableau featured a statue of Lord Ganesha at the front and Lord Venkateswara at the rear, flanked by the Bobbili Veena and traditional Telugu jewellery, offering a true reflection of the State’s cultural essence.
As the tableau moved, a song highlighting the beauty of the Etikoppaka toys played, describing them as ‘toys of Andhra Pradesh, dolls that teach knowledge, toys that bring joy, toys that express devotion and toys that celebrate handcrafts and nature’s colours.’
How are Etikoppaka toys made?
Etikoppaka toys are crafted from Ankudu wood, which is found in the Visakhapatnam region. They are coated with non-toxic, natural paints made from tree bark, leaves and roots. Geotagged in 2017, Etikoppaka toys are exported to Europe and the US.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and deputy CM Konidela Pawan Kalyan praised the Etikoppaka tableau. On Republic Day, both leaders took to their social media platforms to express their admiration and share their joy over the tableau.
