Chennai: Blue Planet reclaims 96 acres of land at India’s largest landfill in Perungudi

Chennai: Blue Planet Environmental Solutions Pte Ltd. (Blue Planet), a global leader in sustainable waste management and circular economy solutions, has successfully reclaimed over 96 acres of land at Perungudi—India’s largest landfill.

Through advanced waste processing, the company has converted a hazardous dumpsite into usable space, processing over 1.73 million cubic meters of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). This achievement reflects Blue Planet's commitment to advancing the circular economy and fostering a cleaner, greener future.

During a site visit to Perungudi, Prashant Singh, Co-Founder and CEO of Blue Planet, highlighted this remarkable accomplishment. Addressing the attendees, he emphasized the urgency of addressing environmental challenges. “Waste is not inevitable; it is a choice. With modern technology and resources, we can transform it. At Blue Planet, we are dedicated to making this transformation a reality. The success of the Perungudi project is a testament to our commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices to address environmental concerns,” Singh said.

In just a short span, Blue Planet has cleared over 13 million tonnes of waste across India, reclaiming 650 acres of land for municipal and public use. The company’s Perungudi reclamation effort, undertaken in partnership with Zigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt. Ltd., a portfolio company of Blue Planet, began in February 2021. Tasked by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), the project aimed to reclaim 225 acres of land burdened by over 30.63 lakh cubic meters of MSW. The GCC area generates approximately 5,500 metric tonnes of waste daily, much of which is deposited at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpsites.

Following the successful reclamation at Perungudi, Blue Planet secured 50% of the contract for a similar bio-mining project at Kodungaiyur. This site spans 352 acres and contains around 74 lakh cubic meters.
