Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh is set to launch India’s first large-scale green ammonia project in Kakinada. This marks a major milestone in India’s clean-energy journey.
The First Major Equipment Erection Ceremony of AM Green’s Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia Complex will be held on January 17, signalling India’s entry into the global green-energy export market.
The landmark event will be attended by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan, underlining the strategic importance of the project for the state and the country.
USD 10 Billion Investment, 8,000 Jobs
Developed by AM Green, the project involves an investment of nearly USD 10 billion, making it one of the largest clean-energy investments in India to date.
During the construction phase alone, it is expected to generate up to 8,000 jobs, apart from creating long-term, high-skill employment in operations and allied sectors such as renewable energy, logistics, storage, and port services.
World’s largest Green Ammonia Complex at Kakinada
The complex, coming up at Kakinada, is India’s first and the world’s largest green ammonia facility, with a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The project is being developed through the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea unit, positioning it as a major industrial revival initiative.
The commissioning will be carried out in phases:
0.5 MTPA by 2027
1.0 MTPA by 2028
1.5 MTPA by 2030
Andhra Pradesh’s End-to-End Green Energy Ecosystem
The project highlights Andhra Pradesh’s ability to offer a complete green-energy value chain within a single state, an unprecedented feat in India.
This includes large-scale solar and wind power generation, round-the-clock renewable energy enabled by pumped hydro storage, green hydrogen production, green ammonia manufacturing, and port-based export infrastructure.
The integrated system will be powered by 7.5 GW of solar and wind energy, supported by 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity and 2 GW of round-the-clock renewable power, including pumped hydro storage projects such as Pinnapuram.
First Green Energy Exports from India
For the first time in India’s history, green energy molecules produced domestically will be exported to international markets. AM Green has entered into long-term supply agreements with global energy major Uniper and is in advanced engagement with partners in Germany, Japan, and Singapore.
Green ammonia from Kakinada will be used globally for clean shipping fuel, power generation, and as a carrier for green hydrogen, supporting international decarbonisation goals.
A Defining Moment for the State and the Nation
Aligned with the Integrated Clean Energy Policy, 2024, the project cements Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in India’s clean-energy transition and positions the state as the country’s primary hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia.
The state government reiterated its commitment to policy support, infrastructure development, and fast-track clearances to attract globally significant clean-energy investments.
“This is not just an industrial project but a statement of intent. Andhra Pradesh is leading India into the era of clean-energy exports and global climate leadership,” an official statement said.
