Pet Hospital open 24x7: Ratan Tata opens Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai

Mumbai: The legendary industrialist and animal lover Ratan Tata officially opened his pet project – Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital in Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi. “We are open,” he shared on social media with the hospital’s helpline numbers.

The project was announced in 2017 but got delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Today, the hospital was built at Rs 165 crores and covers G+4 storeys. It can house 200 patients.

This facility will be one of India’s few 24x7 hospitals for dogs, cats, rabbits and other small animals.

The facilities at the hospital include:

- One surgery unit with four operation theatres

- Inpatient wards: General, ICU, and High Dependency Unit.

- Diagnostic units with MRI, CT, in-house pathology lab, X-ray, 2D-echo

- A particular unit for dental ophthalmology, endoscopy and dermatology

- Therapeutic hydrotherapy services

- Separate waiting rooms.

The team will be led by Thomas Heathcote, a British veterinarian who relocated to Mumbai for the hospital. The doctor team comprises 12 skilled veterinary surgeons, emergency and critical care specialists, diagnostic imaging experts, and operations professionals.

The hospital has an orthopaedics unit that specialises in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions in pets. From fractures to joint diseases, veterinarians utilise techniques to improve mobility and enhance your pet’s quality of life.

Always a pet lover

Ratan Tata, a pet lover, has always shown his kind love for pets, seeking help for dogs on his social media page. His Instagram page is filled with pictures of him with dogs, and those pets which need help for treatment or adoption. Ratan Tata believes that a pet is no different from a member of one’s family and that animal health is more important than ever.

According to his Twitter post in 2012, he had two German shepherds, Tito and Tango. However, in 2019, he wrote on Instagram remembering the 14th birth anniversary of Tito which passed away. “Today would be the 14th birthday of my late dog, Tito. I still come home to two kind souls and meet so many others in and around the office.” While some dogs have the comfort of families, many still continue to struggle on the streets. However, their affection towards man remains unchanged, wrote Tata on Instagram.

His personal involvement in the hospital’s operations, such as sharing the story of a dog in need of a blood transfusion, inspires many to do their part for animal welfare.

Finding help in the community

Recently, he shared an image of a dog receiving treatment at his pet hospital in Mumbai.

“I would appreciate your help. This 7-month-old dog at our animal hospital needs an urgent blood transfusion. He is admitted for a suspected tick fever and life-threatening anaemia. We urgently need a dog blood donor in Mumbai,” read Ratan Tata’s Instagram post.

The post received a great response, with five pet owners coming forward with their dogs to donate blood for a patient in crisis.
