TTD launches pilot project to distribute laddu prasadam in DRDO-developed biodegradable bags

By Newsmeter Network Published on 7 Aug 2024 5:23 AM GMTHyderabad: Devotees in Tirumala can now get laddu prasadam in eco-friendly and sustainable bags.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed biodegradable packaging, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
As part of a pilot project, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has planned to adopt it and use biodegradable bags to distribute the laddus. Recently, the DRDO Chairman Satish Reddy, along with TTD Executive Officer Dr. KS Jawahar Reddy and Additional EO, AV Dharma Reddy, inaugurated an exclusive sale counter at Tirumala.
So far, this new packaging material has been made available to over 40 industries free of cost.
The Idea:
The idea of PBAT-based biodegradable packaging was started by Dr K Veerabrahmam and his team. The biodegradable packaging using PBAT is a polymer derived from petroleum products or plant oils.
"Despite the slightly higher production cost of Rs 160 to 180 per kg compared to traditional polyethylene bags at Rs 140 per kg, DRDO and its partners are committed to keeping these biodegradable bags cost-effective," said Dr Veerabrahmam. "By sharing the technology free of charge and fostering collaborations, we aim to scale up production and distribution efficiently," he added.
Environmental impact:
Environmental impact studies, including the IS 17088 test, have shown that PBAT-based biodegradable bags decompose within three months without leaving harmful residue, making them compostable and eco-friendly.
The potential applications of PBAT-based biodegradable materials extend beyond carry bags to medical waste bags, aprons, garbage bags, nursery bags, shrink films, and packing films, showcasing their versatility.
The patent for this technology is in progress, highlighting DRDO's commitment to finding environmentally friendly replacements for hazardous plastic. The collaboration with Ecolastic Private Limited and the involvement of multiple industries exemplify the collective effort required to combat the plastic pollution crisis.
