Woman blackmailed by neighbour in Srikakulam ends life

Srikakulam: A 30-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her home in Kanchili Town in Srikakulam district, allegedly after her neighbour threated to leak nude videos of her on social media sites such as WhatsApp, Facebook and few others if she didn’t fulfil his sexual favours.

Though the incident took place on Thursday afternoon, it came to light only on Friday after her relatives lodged a police complaint. The deceased was identified as K Sailaja, who took the extreme step and left a suicide letter.

The police said that Sailaja and her husband K Satyanarayana, who is an employee with AP Grameena Vikas Bank, and their three children have been residing in a residential complex in Kanchili in Srikakulam district. Apart from Sailaja’s family, three other families are also residing in the complex and all became friendly with each other.

Taking advantage of Sailaja's friendly attitude, one of her neighbours, A Madhava Rao entered her house and secretly captured videos of Sailaja bathing. He blackmailed her with the videos and allegedly sought sexual favours from her. With the constant harassments from Madhava Rao, Sailaja was mentally disturbed. Adding to the blackmail, another neighbouring couple Eswar Reddy and Tulasi continually passed comments that Sailaja had developed an affair with Madhava Rao.

Upset with the harassments, Sailaja committed suicide after her husband went to work and her children were sleeping in another room.

Based on the complaint and the suicide letter, Sub-Inspector of Police, K Venkatesh rushed to the spot and retrieved the body and shifted it to the government hospital for post mortem.

"We have registered a case of abetment of suicide (Under Section 306 of IPC) against Madhava Rao and two others based on the suicide letter. Our investigation is on to nab all the accused in the case and we are also examining the mobile phone of Madhava Rao," said K Venkatesh.
