Women pillion-rider hit by HMWSSB water tanker dies

Hyderabad: A woman pillion riding an Ola Scooter died in an accident after a water tanker, belonging to HMWS&SB (Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board), hit the scooter at Kukatpally on Saturday. The victim, identified as M. Sandhya, came under the tanker wheels and died on the spot. Police registered a case against the tanker driver and began an investigation.

Police said Sandhya, living at Miyapur, is working as a project officer at Deepak Foundation, an NGO, at Jeedimetla. On Saturday morning, she had booked an Ola ride to go to her office. When she was pillion riding on the Ola vehicle, a speeding tanker hit their vehicle from the rear. She fell from the bike and came under the wheels of the tanker. The rider escaped with minor injuries, the police said. Police found that rash and negligent driving of the tanker driver led to the accident.

Earlier, Cyberabad traffic police had taken up an extensive campaign against pillion riders riding without a helmet. A majority of the pillion riders are yet to start this practice.

Traffic police once again made an appeal to the pillion riders to wear helmets for their safety. In this incident too, death could have been avoided if the pillion rider was wearing a helmet, they noted.
