A group of 15 people was returning to their village, Kuruvapuram in Karnataka, when their boat capsized. While 11 people managed to swim ashore, three women and a small child drowned. The four have been identified as Suma Latha, Roja, Chenamma, and Narsamma. The SI of Matkal police station in Naryanpet, Ramulu, said an NDRF team is searching for the four but has found no trace of them yet.
Kuruvapuram is an island village in Karnataka and the villagers usually travel to Telangana's Matkal village to buy essential commodities. On Tuesday, the group was returning home after visiting the Dattatreya Temple when the incident occurred.
“We launched a rescue operation in the early hours. The bodies were probably washed away by the strong river currents. We have deployed boats and increased the radius of the search till the boundaries of Karnataka. Officials of both Telangana and Karnataka are helping in the rescue operation. Due to the water currents, the bodies may have got stuck below the rocks,” said an NDRF official.
