However, he was rescued unhurt thanks to the quick action by zoo staff. The man has been identified as Rehan Khan (28)
“Rehan, son of Nabi Hasan, hails from Bihar. He did not sustain any injury and was rescued to safety. Initial suspicions point to the fact that he is mentally unstable,” said Chinmoy Biswal, DCP of South-East Delhi.
Rehan has been handed over to police officials who are currently questioning him. They will take him for a routine medical check-up. According to zoo officials, the incident took place around 12:30 pm. Rehan jumped over the cage, sat in front of the lion and started teasing him. Currently, the situation is under control.
Riyaz Khan, PRO, National Zoological Park, Delhi, said, “The incident took place in beat number 17 of the zoo. A QRT team and other officials reached the spot and offered a ladder and rope to him, but he refused the help. Instead, he kept shouting that he ‘came to die’. Later, the staff diverted the lion’s attention and tranquilised him. Afterwards, Rehan was rescued.”
