A viral Instagram video claims that doing a 7-day Chia seeds water challenge can reduce bloating in the face and belly, reduce weight, and improve digestion and skin health.
Fact Check
Newsmeter found that the claim was misleading. Though chia seeds are rich in fibre and protein, relying only on the seeds for weight loss can be counterproductive.
Dr Venkat Nani, general physician from Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad said, āThe fibre and protein contents of chia seeds makes one feel full and reduces appetite and calorie intake. But this can never be used as a meal replacement.ā
However, chia seeds soaked in water can be used as a snack to control the appetite and calorie intake of the main course.
āThe lower mineral content in the chia seeds does not help in maintaining the muscle mass. Weight loss in a week is due to water and muscle loss but the individual can regain the weight in another few days,ā Dr Venkat added.
However, as per WebMD, too much consumption can lead to constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and gas. Also, dry chia seeds can get stuck up in the throat, and some people can have an allergic reaction including vomiting, diarrhoea, and itching in the tongue.
Further, there are no scientific studies to substantiate the claims that chia seeds are a superfood in reducing weight and reducing inflammation due to its antioxidant properties.
āThe functioning of the human body slows if chia seeds and water are taken continuously for a week. Only a balanced diet, with reduced calories and exercise, can help in reducing weight. People should not fall for false and misleading dietary practices propagated on social media platforms,ā Dr Venkat said.
