Fact Check: Women throws her kids into Ganga unable to feed them, is false

Hyderabad: The entire economy of the country is in a halt as the whole country is under lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. People are desperate to resume work as soon as this situation subsides and many migrant workers can be seen waiting to go to their homes.

Amid this situation, a news that a woman from Uttar Pradesh, was forced to throws her 5 kids as she was unable to feed them during the lockdown period went viral.

Aam aadmi party leader Prashant Bhushan shared this claim on Twitter.

Even member of Parliament, former finance minister P. Chidambaram retweeted this claim.

The news is viral on Facebook too.

The news was also published by many news media outlets like Gulfnews etc.

According to these reports, the woman named Manju, a resident of Jahagira village, Bhadohi district in UP, after having an altercation with her husband about money for daily expenses took her five children and pushed them into Ganges, before jumping in herself.

Fact Check:

Replying to P.Chidambaram's tweet, Bhadohi police tweeted that there was no such situation in their house. The food was cooked and ready to be consumed. The police tweeted two photographs depicting this.

Bhadohi police also shared a video in which we can see Manju giving a statement why she threw her children into the river.

According to her statement, the issue was not hunger, the essential supplies to sustain her family were present in the house.

They also released a press note about the issue being circulated in social media as false. Manju Devi did not commit this crime due to hunger. And cases are being registered against all the media outlets which reported the issue with false claims.

Hence, the claims that the mother threw her five children into river Ganges due to hunger amidst lockdown is false. This happened in rage after she had an argument with her husband and not due to hunger and distress.
