Fact Check
NewsMeter found that the viral claim is false. The video of home minister Amit Shah apologising is AI-generated.
Using relevant keyword searches, we found no credible news reports or official statements indicating that Amit Shah held a press conference or issued an apology related to the recent India-Pakistan conflict. No verified social media posts from official government accounts or reputable sources corroborated the claim.
In the viral video, Amit Shah appears to speak in Hindi, expressing remorse for the conflict and its impact. However, the video exhibits unnatural facial movements, inconsistent lip-syncing and a robotic tone in the audio, all hallmarks of AI manipulation.
NewsMeter analysed a 30-second sample of the video using Hive Moderation, an AI detection tool, which returned a 94.9 per cent likelihood that the content is AI-generated, strongly indicating it is a deepfake.
The videoās context aligns with a broader wave of misinformation following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, after which India launched Operation Sindoor, escalating tensions along the Line of Control (LoC). A ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10, but pro-Pakistan social media accounts have since circulated AI-generated videos targeting Indian leaders, including prime minister Narendra Modi, falsely claiming they apologised for the conflict.
NewsMeterās analysis, supported by Hive Moderationās findings, confirmed that the video of Amit Shah is a deepfake. The claim that he apologised for the conflict with Pakistan is false.
