HYDERABAD: Social media users are sharing a video of dishes being washed in unhygienic conditions. Users claim that staff in a hotel at Kottayam in Kerala wash dishes in a pothole.

The text shared along with the video reads: " A veg hotel in Kottayam. Avoid hotel food as much as possible."

FACT CHECK:

NewsMeter did not find any media organization reporting on such an incident taking place in Kottayam. If indeed a restaurant was caught doing so, all major news outlets would have reported it. This indicates that the incident did not take place in Kottayam.

A reverse image search led to multiple news reports stating that the incident took place in Kuala Lumpur in 2018. The workers of a banana leaf rice restaurant in Bangsar were caught washing dishes in a puddle of murky water.

Multiple media outlets including Daily Mail, NST, The Star, Strait Times, and Today Online reported that the restaurant was caught on camera indulging in unhygienic practices. The restaurant issued an apology, blaming the incident on new staff but was shut down. "Hygiene and cleanliness are our top priority," the restaurant said while apologizing in a Facebook post.

However, health authorities shut the restaurant indefinitely after finding there were no adequate washing facilities.

An old video from Kuala Lumpur is being falsely shared as a recent incident in Kottayam, Kerala.
