Fact Check: Did Ratan Tata wanted Liquor and Aadhaar linked? No

Hyderabad: A post that claims industrialist and philanthropist, Ratan Tata said that the sale of liquor should be done only through Aadhaar has gone viral. The statement reads, "The sale of liquor should be done only through Aadhaar card. No government subsidy or facilities should be given to those who buy liquor. If someone has money to buy liquor, then he is also able to buy ration. Here we are giving free ration to the people, while they are wasting money on liquor. -Ratan Tata."

The same statement was also passed on Facebook in Tamil.

Fact Check:

The claim is false

Several media organizations such as NDTV, Hindustan Times and Indian Express covered this incident stating that Ratan Tata has made no such comment. Reports carried a screenshot of Tata's Instagram story where he addressed this issue and flagged the post as fake news. The 83-year-old industrialist clarified, "This was not said by me. Thank you." along with a GIF with the words "Fake News".

This was not the first time a statement has been falsely attributed to Ratan Tata. Earlier this year a statement on Tata promising to spend his entire wealth to make India COVID-free had gone viral. This was false too. Neither did Ratan Tata nor the Tata group made such an announcement.
