Old video of naked protest in Chile falsely linked to Iran protests

Hyderabad: Social media is flooded with fake claims and misinformation since protests erupted in Iran after the death of 22-year-old Masha Amini. Amini died in police custody after she was arrested by Iran's morality police for her "inappropriate" dress.

Now, a video which shows naked women protesting is going viral with the claim that the video shows Iranian women protesting against the draconian hijab policy of the Iran government. The video also shows two giant puppets, one holding a gun and the other controlling the gun from behind.

A Twitter user shared the video and wrote, "Anti Hijab protest has escalated to a topless protest in Iran."

Fact Check

NewsMeter performed a reverse image search of the video's keyframe and found a Spanish article from 2019 carrying a screenshot from the viral video. The article said the video is of a demonstration when the Chilean people took to the streets to protest against the inequality in Chile.

It also said that the two giant puppets in the video demonstrate the repression by the Chilean cops under former President Sebastián Piñera.

The article also has a tweet from 2019 carrying the same video.

The article also mentioned that the demonstration took place in front of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. We geolocated the university and found the same street view as seen in the viral video.

Another Spanish website, EL Cooperante, also used a screenshot of the viral video reporting the incident in an article published on 26 November 2019.

It is evident that the viral video is from Chile and dates back to 2019. Hence, the claim is false.
