Visakhapatnam: Taking a holy dip in the sea during Maha Shivaratri festival turned tragic for a youngster after he drowned near Pedajalaripeta, Waltair, here on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as 11-year-old G Sidhu, a VI Standard student and a resident of Peda Waltair area.

Sidhu, along with his friends, had gone to the beach near the Waltair bus depot Saturday morning to take the holy dip. Tragically, the boy, who was not a good swimmer, was caught in a current and drowned. Locals tried to rescue Sidhu but in vain. They retrieved his body.

It may be recalled that two years ago two persons drowned after they were pulled in by strong current at the beach near Sagarnagar, when they were taking a Maha Shivaratri holy dip.
