Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts across Telangana over the next 24 to 48 hours, indicating an increase in monsoon activity across the state.

The forecast, released on Monday evening, also includes a thunderstorm alert accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds of up to 30-40 kmph for all districts.

Rainfall expected in 30+ districts

Heavy rainfall is expected in multiple districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sirisilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Hanamkonda, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy.

ā€œThe current weather system is drawing significant moisture from the Bay of Bengal, enhancing rainfall activity over Telangana. We are closely monitoring developments, especially in eastern and northern districts,ā€ said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter.

Thunderstorm and wind alert statewide

Apart from rain, the MET department has issued a warning for thunderstorms with lightning and surface winds in the range of 30-40 kmph for all districts of Telangana. This includes both rural and urban areas. Residents have been advised to take precautions, especially in areas prone to waterlogging or poor drainage.

ā€œLightning strikes and gusty winds are common during monsoon storms. People are advised to avoid open areas and take shelter during thunderstorm activity,ā€ said Sridhar.

Cloudy week ahead for Telangana

According to the forecast, most districts in Telangana will experience overcast skies throughout the coming week. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain between 32°C and 34°C.

ā€œThough temperatures will drop slightly due to cloud cover, humidity levels will remain high, particularly in central Telangana,ā€ said Sridhar.

Conditions in Hyderabad and surrounding areas

In Hyderabad and its neighbouring districts — Medchal-Malkajgiri and Ranga Reddy — overcast conditions will continue with occasional rainfall. However, no isolated intense spells have been forecast yet. The GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation) has been alerted to prepare for possible urban flooding in low-lying areas.

Public advisory

Authorities have urged the public to stay informed through official weather bulletins and avoid travel during heavy rains or storm alerts unless necessary. Farmers, especially those in the sowing phase, are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their crops from water stagnation and wind damage.

The Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) has also activated its online rain monitoring dashboard for public access to real-time rainfall data across mandals and districts.

Preparedness underway

District administrations across the State have been instructed to remain on alert, with emergency response teams in place. School managements and local authorities have been asked to assess risk levels in flood-prone areas.

As the monsoon current strengthens, further advisories will be issued based on rainfall accumulation and satellite inputs.
