Jumbo kills 18YO girl in Chittoor, mother injured after elephant run amok

Chittoor: An 18-year-old girl was trampled to death while her mother sustained injuries when a wild elephant ran amok at Pattichenu in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.
The deceased girl has been identified as Sonia. The incident occurred when Sonia and her mother were busy in a groundnut farm. A wild elephant suddenly charged at them. Sonia was trampled to death while her mother sustained injuries.
Hearing the elephantās trumpet, locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured woman to the nearby hospital. A case has been registered and the investigation is on.
Officials said the farmers of Chittoor, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts have been facing Jumbo menace for the past few years.
Over 18 people were killed by the elephants and bears in the state during the past decade. Eight have also died. Two of the jumbos were killed by the people.
In search of food, the elephants mostly damage the banana, cashew nut, sugarcane, groundnut, and other crops in the region.
