Guntur: Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for murdering 20-year-old Dalit engineering student in a broad daylight on Independence Day in Guntur city.

The accused has been identified as Kunchala Sasi Krishna, a native of Mutluru village in Guntur district. The victim has been identified as Nallapu Ramya, 20, a B.Tech third-year student.

A senior police officer said Krishna met Ramya over Instagram about six months ago. Police said later they developed a relationship.

However, Krishna started suspecting Ramya of having an affair with someone else. Both squabbled over the issue on Sunday. However, it took a dangerous turn when he stabbed her before fleeing the spot.

Investigation into the murder case has revealed that Krishna is a school dropout who studied up to class XI. He worked as a mechanic in an automobile shop earlier. He used to pick up fights with others over silly reasons. He was caught twice for stealing petrol from bikes. Krishna's parents have been separated.

Hailing from Amartaluru village, the victim along with his elder sister Mounika were staying at their grandmother's house in Guntur city. Ramya was a student at a minority Engineering College in Chebroulu.

Police traced Krishna at Narasaraopet with the help of CCTV footage and his mobile location. It may be recalled that Krishna stabbed Ramya in the throat and stomach six times. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera.

Police said that Krishan allegedly attempted to commit suicide by cutting his wrist vein after seeing the cops approaching. He was rushed to Narasaraopet government hospital and after first aid shifted to Guntur.

The murder of Ramya has sent shock waves across the state. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the incident and spoke to AP Police Chief D Gowtham Sawang. The AP government announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the victim's parents.

Police said that the CCTV footage clearly shows that Krishan argued with Ramya a few minutes before the attack near an eatery. He came back to the same place again on a bike after and attacked her with the knife. Krishna fled the scene after stabbing Ramya.

Though some people were present when Krishan flashed a knife, no one dared to stop him and save the girl.
