Rs 2.3 cr worth smuggled gold seized from bus passengers near Nellore
By Newsmeter Network Published on 11 March 2020 3:42 PM ISTHyderabad: Sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Nellore, working on a tip-off, intercepted a sleeper bus (AR01 J 5225) on Tuesday and found that two passengers were carrying gold concealed in a cloth belt with a zip tied to their waist.
The bus travelling from Coimbatore to Vijayawada was intercepted at Venkatachalam Toll plaza, NH-16 in Nellore district at around 2:30 am. Besides the two, a third person was found carrying gold in a small hand bag.
The three admitted that gold was smuggled into the country and they do not have any documents to validate their purchase or import.
The total smuggled gold bars and pieces, weighing 5460.9 grams, are valued at Rs 2.33 crore. They have been seized under Customs Act, 1962 and the three have been arrested. Further investigation is in progress.
