Eggs to chicken: On World Protein Day, IPEMA pitches for prioritizing affordable protein sources

Hyderabad: Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association recommend protein intake as per requirement of 0.8-1g per kg of body weight

Hyderabad: Studies indicate that 73% of Indians suffer from protein deficiency, and 17% of the population faces issues related to being underweight. Health experts warn that inadequate protein intake can lead to weakened immunity, impaired growth, and increased risk of chronic diseases.

On the occasion of World Protein Day (February 27), Poultry India and the Indian Poultry Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) are urging people to prioritize high-quality, affordable protein sources like eggs and chicken to address this nutritional gap.

Recommended Daily Intake

According to the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), the daily recommended protein intake is 0.8-1g per kg of body weight, with an additional 20-30g per day advised for physically active individuals.

Dr. Madhulika Rao, a general physician in Hyderabad, emphasized, ā€œProtein is crucial for muscle repair, immune function, and metabolic health. However, many Indians rely on carbohydrate-heavy diets, neglecting protein intake, which can have long-term health consequences.ā€

Eggs and Chicken as Affordable Solutions

Eggs and chicken are among the most accessible and cost-effective protein sources. A medium egg provides around 6g of protein, while chicken is a lean protein source rich in iron, zinc, and B vitamins.

ā€œEggs are a complete protein source and should be included in daily meals. Eating at least 5-6 eggs per week can help prevent muscle loss and improve overall nutrition,ā€ said Dr. Lavanya Reddy, a Hyderabad-based nutritionist

She added, ā€œChicken is an excellent source of protein, supporting muscle growth and tissue repair. Regular consumption can help reduce protein deficiency, particularly in young adults and children.ā€

Raising Awareness on Protein Deficiency

Uday Sing Bayas, President of Poultry India/IPEMA, stressed the importance of changing dietary habits: ā€œMany Indians assume a full meal means a healthy meal, but without sufficient protein, the body lacks essential nutrients. Prioritizing protein-rich foods like poultry and eggs is necessary for better health.ā€

With poultry farming in India following quality and safety standards, Poultry India is encouraging consumers to make informed dietary choices to combat protein deficiency.
